Fenstads Mother

In the story, Fenstads Mother, by Charles Baxter, characters receipts our attention to the story and we due to readers try to seize them. The characters actions and the things they read are controlled by the author, of course, just like information farther in the story is controlled. The author uses the vim and dialogue to figure each person in a particular way, to mature personalities. Since, we participate in analyzing and compassionate these story characters.

The main complex, Harry Fernstad, is a brouchure writer, but he further teaches an extension English composition class at the downtown campus of the state university two nights a day. He doesnt need the coin, but it is stated that he likes teaching strangers and enjoys the sense of assumption that classrooms clench for him. He has some students from different jobs; a hairdresser, a garage mechanic, a housewife named Mrs. Nelson, three sanitation set and a obsidian man, called York Follette. Although Fenstad seems to love spending time with them, it is unconcealed that he likes to be around people who do not know his inner world. He keeps some mild of a distance with them. He chooses to survey these people, he doesnt participate in their speech, he exclusive begs for the answers he has asked. He teaches logic, but when he is confronted with questions concerning real life, he argot answer. He maintains this distance to both life and people.

In the beginnig of the story, we see that Fenstad is very fond of cool - skating. Seeing hes business to stop his mother he stops and decides to skate a little bit. From the words used to describe the locus, we see that Fenstad also here keeps the distance with his friends. He individual end to his friends, he doesnt utter slice talk to them. It seems that his friends are very kindred to Fenstad. They like the equivalent things and flash the same attitudes towards life. Fenstad never wants to change his rutine way of life.

Fenstads mother, Mrs. Clara Fenstad, is an old lady who spent her life in the company of rebels and deviationists. She used to be very active in politics and she stil writes to her congressman and to political dictators around the globe. She is opposite to her son that she loves to be with people and she shares her opinions concerning the real world. She starts to attend his sons logic class. She is very kind to the students and they seem to enjoy spending

time with her. She also likes the atmosphere of the class because she adores people with ideas. That is why she wants to attend the class for the second time. She is a very marginal woman. Her mind is open to new possibilities. She becomes so interested with the man, York Follette, that they instantly become friends. That is because he is a different man. He is African American, he has different political views, he listens to music Mrs. Fenstad is not familiar

with. They both try to understand each other. Mr. Fenstad also knew that his mother would like to meet this man and as the story continues we see that is true. One of the reasons she likes this man is that she does not want people agree with existing theories; she always searches for the new.

They go to Country Bobs to have some tea after the lecture. This scene shows us how the mother and his son contrast with each other. A beggar come to their table and asks for some money. Mrs Fenstad pities the woman and wants to give her the coat she is wearing. Fenstad is almost appaled by the audicity of the homeless woman and by his mothers action. He feels very uncomfortable and offers the woman some Money in order to leave them. This middle - aged man is not as generous as his mother and he thinks of himself first before thinking about the comfort of others. Mr Fenstad seems to be disgusted by the woman: The womans mouth was open, and her stagnant - water breath washed over him ( pg 122 ).

Fenstad also carries a dilemma in his innerself. It is said that he attends church regularly. But, in the beginning of the story, as he is coming from the church, he is trying to determine if the wine of his breath could be understood by his mother. He conradicts with himself. If he is not doing it for himself, it is possible to think that he lives for the sake of his mother. Her mother is the one who is amused by her sons churchgoings.

Although these two people contradict with each other in some ways, they have some similarities. They are considerate people. They both care for each other. As Fenstad enters her house, he immediately checks it for any signs of memory loss or depression. He is also so worried about her health after he sees her sitting on a bank in a cold night. He is afraid that she might catch an illness. Mrs. Fenstad also cares for her sons mental well - being. She asks him some questions about his soul. She feels that his son does not enough time thinking about himself. They both try to understand each other by asking questions.

Fenstad is divorced from Eleanor. He has a girlfriend called Susan. They enjoy spending time with each other because in the story it is said that they go skating some nights. Susan is a very silent girl. She once makes a conversation with the mother; and in that Mrs. Fenstad does not listen her. Clara Fenstad tries to be an active woman in the story. Even she fails in some parts she tries her best and the end of the story is a proof of that. Contrary to Mrs. Fenstad, Susan shows no course of action. Fenstads choice of such a girl shows that he wants someone different from his mother.

As we understand from the title of the story, Clare Fenstad is always referred as Fernstads mother. The author and also Fenstad himself do not refer to her using the name Clara. Its only once that Fenstad introduced his mother to the class using her first name Clara. It is again here a man introducing a woman. Shes not given a voice here. Its not Mrs. Clara Fenstad here who tells the class her name. Its the same when she wants to give her coat to the beggar. She says Take it before my son stops me. ( pg. 122 ) This sentence shows us that in a way shes dependent on her son. Nevertheless, her going to the bathroom shows us a sign of her rebellious side. She doesnt want tos tay there anymore. She wants to leave her son alone. This kind of rebellion reminds me the play A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen. Nora, the major character of the play is a voiceless woman. She is always referred as little, bird, doll. She has no right to decide on her own. She behaves according to expectations of her husband. Her husband needs her to be a good wife for him. On the other hand, Nora needs him for protection. As the play contiunes Nora starts realize her self identity. In the end she becomes aware of her oppression and decides to leave her husband declaring that she must make sense of [her]self and everything around her she walks out and slams the door behind her. When we go back to our story, we will find Clara Fenstad listening to jazz music with this black man, York Follette, in her own house.. When her son sees them together, she declares being alone for so many years as her unique problem. Here, she does not behave according to her sons expectations. She does something for her own and she enjoys it. Moreover, her broadly speaking about politics, writing letters to congressman, spending her life in the company of rebels are proofs to her rebellious side. She is always open to new things and she prefers people with new ideas.

As the story continues we see both good and bad sides of these characters. Charles Baxter has developed them so that we see several sides of their natures. Fenstad and his mother work well together. While I was studying on my essay, these contrasts helped me to develop my ideas about their characters.

Filtering Through Celebrity Gossip Lies And Truth

Everyday new celebrity gossip stories hit the front pages of the entertainment sites but how does one separate the truth from fiction? Of the popular news media outlets some of the more received like People Magazine, nurse to be more reliable sources, confirming stories whereas much over possible before publishing. This tends to make these outlets trusted sources but at the twin time much slow to come out with controversial news that ' s harder to confirm and that might generate fallout. Consequent all if a story reflects ill on a celebrity, they and their reps are not likely to confirm and may in actuality blatantly deny until totally cornered. They may further be reluctant to co - operate with that media outlet in the booked.

There are again multifarious media outlets that are more gallant and will go forward with publishing a story pulchritudinous gladly if they believe it ' s based on truth, aligned if the gossip is based on circumstantial evidence. These types of stories wish the most detective work to weigh the validity of the story. New couple alerts are a good example. Celebrities are often spotted ' looking cozy ' together all the time. Sometimes these types of stories have some supporting photo evidence, other times it ' s based on hearsay third party witnesses. Many times these stories are just planted by reps. and the celebrities themselves for publicity purposes. Jennifer Aniston is forever being linked to every leading man she works with, especially since her splitting from Brad Pitt. Fans want to see Jen find love again and tabloids are anxious to deliver to sell magazines. Two thirds of those stories or more are false of course. When Jen was initially linked with John Mayer, frankly I was skeptical. The funny / sad thing was, when Jen broke up with Mayer, she was immediately linked with another hot new guy. This rumor which should have made anyone highly skeptical soon proved to be false but that ' s the nature of this business. Without going into a whole manifesto here, another type of story example that ' s usually hard to get confirmation on is celebrities stricken with health issues. It was ' The National Enquirer ' that broke the news on the Patrick Swayze cancer story, which was confirmed by his rep. after the actor was ' outed '. Meanwhile stories like, Paul Newman ' s alleged battle with cancer has never been officially confirmed.

Many gossip news outlets fall into a third category. Seemingly under the gun to crank out new articles, they throw in a few ' trash gossip ' stories in the mix of each publication. Most of these fiction based stories are not malicous, and based on some shred of truth, that I call ' progression stories '. A celebrity dating the same person for a while, is reported to be, breaking up, cheating or planning their wedding. A celebrity known to drink, is going to rehab. A celebrity is photographed with a new ring, there engaged. A couple weeks before Jennifer Aniston split up with John Mayer she appeared on two magazine covers on the same week. One reporting she was planning her wedding, the second saying she was already making plans to have a baby.

My biggest pet peeves in the truth and lies game is twofold:

Media outlets and websites that deliberately publish malicious ' false stories ' for the sake of publicity. Many of these stories capitalizing on celebrities misfortunes and are attention grabbing but often based on nothing more then conjecture or just imagination. A recent trash story, that had my blood boiling, claimed that Christina Applegate was going to put off treatment for breast cancer so she could have a baby! The tabloid picked up on the fact that: ' Christina told an interviewer that she didn ' t want to wait until her mid - forties to have a baby, and that her biological clock was ticking. ' We learned 5 days later that Christina Applegate had already had a double mastectomy performed to remove the cancer.

Likewise media outlets that turn their back on certain types of stories because they don ' t want to get their hands dirty or offend their audience. Recently the NY Post ' s famous Page Six published under their ' blind items ':

' Which hunk in a summer movie is a violent, closeted homosexual? The heartthrob snuck into his ex ' s apartment a few months ago and raped him so violently, the ex ended up in the hospital - and the actor paid him $500, 000 to keep his mouth shut. '

Well I guess you can see why they might be a bit reluctant to name, names. It ' s not unusual for one of these blind items, which are posted frequently to eventually be reported with names by more daring publishers.

Some years ago, a lengthy article was published by the BBC on the vagaries of the baby boomer reproduction. It was a curse critique of a engendering hell bent on wrecking the planet, along with most of its social standards.

Contraception was the new age weapon censure unwanted maturation and funded with midpoint the alike enthusiasm owing to the space relay. Sexually transmitted diseases were warded off with condoms, brought to fashionable sophistication to make them more upscale and marketed to enervate: with relatively masterful protection at its fingertips the baby boomer set thumbed its nose at the rest of the World and carried on doing what it did best - But - we baby boomers have again blessed the World with some - good stuff '. Let us not high hat space trip; plastic surgery; computer technology; option medicine; the mobile phone; the morning adjoining pellet; groceries hygiene; seat belts; sat nav; disposable diapers; the hundreds of cures that have been brought to people with horrible diseases and disabilities: baby boomer technology is not all bad - Baby boomers are thought to be single - handedly responsible for the breakdown of family values in the new Century. With the escalation of the divorce rate, the onset of the - new family unit ' became something the World had to cope with; stepsons and daughters having to build trusting relationships with step fathers and mothers; children abandoned while their natural fathers or mothers sought new relationships elsewhere; the old concept of - making your bed and lying in it ' out the window; to be replaced by the - take what you can get out of life because everyone else does ' attitude that is more typical of baby boomers than loyalty, fidelity and - staying together for the sake of the children ', so popular in pre - WW2 days.

As women continue to be liberated and strive for sexual equality; as gays fly out of the closet at the rate of knots and as America invites its first African American president to make a cameo appearance on - The Simpsons ', it is obvious that the boomer generation accepts nothing as impossible.

To add insult to injury, the baby boomer generation continued its sexual freedom motif at all cost and instead of putting a curb on its sexual activities, spent squillions on research to sponsor the ultimate birth control - the Pill!! Hooray! The greediest and most consumerist generation the World has ever seen is by nature deaf to criticism so there is little plastic surgery london point in harping about boomers leaving the planet in poor condition! - Consumerism is all ' to many of the baby boomer generation; unsurprising when you consider the product standards on offer.
