Do You Know The Difference Between An Anecdote And A Story In Public Speaking

Good public speaking requires the use of anecdotes throughout your presentation and, in some cases, stories. All anecdotes are stories but not all stories are anecdotes. Stint the anecdote is repeatedly shorter than a story, do you know what distinguishes the two?

An anecdote is a true story; seeing, a story can be true but neednt be.

One of the strengths of speakers who have goodness is that all of their words are true. The only time you would make up a story, for example, is if you were dealing with a comparison, a contrast, or trying to make a point. In doing so, it would be your responsibility to explain to your audience that what you are describing is fiction. If your fictional story is pertinent to your topic, then by all means, you can use it, especially if it helps explain an idea or a theory.

The anecdote, on the other hand, is a story about you or someone you know, or even someone you dont know, again, relevant to your topic. It is brief; it can be humorous; it can be thoughtful or profound. Its importance is that it gives you, the speaker, credibility.

I use anecdotes throughout my presentations in which I reference the successes of my clients. In doing so, it shows that I have experience, knowledge and am trustworthy about my topic. In fact, some of my anecdotes about my clients are on video. The audience can then see that what I am explaining is true because they watch it happening to someone other than me. And, in that sense, it gives me even more credibility.

Your experiences or your clients experiences in your area of expertise are what you need to reference in a persuasive speech or presentation because your purpose is to get your audience to agree with you, to believe in you, and to possibly invest in you, your services, or your product. And, with competition as great as it is in the speaking world, being able to stand out from the crowd is not an easy task; therefore, being able to testify that your message is valid, by means of anecdotes, is of utmost importance.

By no means should your entire script be anecdotal. Just giving anecdotes is not a presentation but a story - telling. Audience loves true stories but that is not why they came to hear you unless you are giving an informative presentation about something you achieved that is near miraculous!

Always tell your audience the truth; stick to anecdotes; and use them within reason.

Copywriting for the Web - Telling a Story

One of the things that stops web marketers icebox in their tracks is learning forceful copywriting. We have all empitic sales pages that warble and we have all pragmatic sales pages that stink and we repeatedly fear we will fall sometime closer toward the later. There are, however, some simple things to grasp in capacity when copywriting for the web. I will go over one of them here - Telling a Story.

One of the best ways to engage your preacher is to speak to their emotions and the easiest way to do that is to tell a story. There are different levels of story - telling you can use in your copywriting. One is the story of someone ( preferably you, but it doesn ' t have to be ) who had the pain the reader is suffering. When you tell that story, your reader will feel like they have been understood and will look forward to a solution.

The other side of story - telling is the notion of the whole page being a story. It isn ' t quite like a short story with characters and a plot, but it does have a beginning, middle and end and should flow from one to the other logically so the reader is compelled to read on.

The beginning is, of course, the problem. Your story, or the story of someone, real or fictional, who suffered, presents that problem in an emotional way.

In the middle of a story, something changes. In the middle of your sales page, you make your introduction of the solution - your product or service. This moves the reader to want to know more, to " see how it all ends up. "

From the middle to the end, the story develops as you detail the product, its features and its benefits, the issues, dismissing possible objections your reader may have. Which leads, of course to the end.

The end is the " call to action ". This is a place where many people miss an opportunity in their copy writing. Once you have laid out all the details, you must actually ask for the sale. Tell the reader exactly what they must do next. " Click on the ' buy now ' button, enter your payment information and you will immediately be taken to the solution! "

We want to know how the story ends. Don ' t leave your ending out of your story.

( Thinking of it this way, the closing and P. S. areas are sort of like epilogues to the story. )

We all love stories, and when you think of your sales page as a story, the reader will pick up on that and will want to read more.

Darjeeling was initially ruled by the kings of Sikkim and it was only in 1947 that it joined West Bengal. The place was also a part of Nepal for some period of time. It was the British who first discovered the potential of Darjeeling as a hill station and promoted the place as a summer resort for the Europeans. When the British arrived, Darjeeling was pure heaven with almost the entire area covered with forests. They developed roads and some basic infrastructure in the place. That was when Darjeeling tourism began taking roots.

In early 1800s, Darjeeling got a feature which became its identity - the tea gardens, and the credit goes to a civil surgeon named Dr. Campbell. He sowed tea seeds in his backyard just to see if the plant grows well. When the plant flourished beautifully, he recognized suitability of the soil and weather for tea plantations. Singapore, a place which is known to be the cleanest and fastest growing metropolis in the world, has a history which tells a very different story compared to the present day Singapore.
