What is a short story?

We ought to start by considering what a short story is, and the following definition is right worth bearing in understanding:

Here are six important points about what makes a good short story work. Becoming familiar with them should help you to study the stories you read, help you think about why some stories work, or don ' t work, and help you to plan your plots.

1. The story is told from the point of view of the central character, with whom the reader identifies.

2. An element of conflict is introduced early on, usually in the first paragraph or two.

3. We are held in suspense as we wonder how the character will resolve his / her conflict.

4. There is a climax at or near the end in which the conflict is resolved.

5. The story focuses on a single event, which is a crisis point the central character ' s life.

6. The story is shown through the characters, without the narrator ' s intrusion.

In 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park hosted 40, 000 tourists. The next year saw 500, 000 tourists walking beneath the trees.

Today

Gatlinburg is the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The original log cabin sits in the center of the town, as does the original schoolhouse and general store. The descendants of the original settlers still live and work there. Progress may have changed the shape of the town, in the form of roads, malls and tourist attractions, but the soul of Gatlinburg is still about the trees. The city contains the only ski resort in Tennessee, so the trees are the focus year - round. Nine hundred families call it home and it is the most popular tourist city in Tennessee.
